The history of religion on the islands of Providencia and Santa Catalina is very interesting. It began when a group of Christians who were being oppressed by their religious beliefs and practice in Europe decided to seek a safe and peaceful place.
They came to the shores of the United States on a ship called the Mayflower and settled there. After a while, within the group of people who had lived in the community, a small group decided to leave the settlement in the United States and look for a more private and peaceful place, and eventually arrived at “Old Providence Island” in their boat, the Seaflower, under the leadership of the Livingston Missionaries.
This group settled in Providencia, and after exploring the archipelago of islands in search of drinking water, built their church in “Smooth Water Bay”, the first Baptist Church of Providencia, which was moved to “Bottom House” years later. In a planning meeting of the church, two groups failed to agree , so a group decided to establish a planning meeting for the new church in a section of town called Saint Isabel at the time. Their new leader was Simon Howard, who was designated in 1891.
The current pastor of the church is Marlon Howard Sjogreen.
